Major Storm even in Queensland rocks Insurers

Queensland has experienced some of the toughest weather conditions over the last few weeks with a large area of Brisbane getting hit with a huge hail storm. In fact, the storm was so severe that it caused the worse damage since 2014. In fact, it was some of the largest hail storm ice balls Australia has ever seen.
The Bureau of Meteorology closely monitored the storm and measured hail from the storm reaching a huge 14 centimetres. They advised that hail storm at this size is quite rare and will hopefully not be seen for a long time to come.
Storms like these are very bad news for insurers with huge payouts expected. The Insurance Council of Australia has rated this particular storm event as a catastrophe and the first one for the 2020 to 2021 season. There are expected to be thousands of claims of significant value with 5000 claims already received by the Sunday after the event. To help customers through this difficult situation, a disaster hotline and industry taskforce has been made available.
Also experiencing extensive damage was the power network with 120 powerlines damaged by the storm which recorded around 300,000 lightning strikes. Energex reported that over 14,000 customers had still not had their power restored as of Sunday morning with a majority of the customers on Sunshine Coast.
